but no! it has to be DAVID TENNANT because he was the Doctor back in that episode and even if Matt Smith is the Doctor right now, the face of the brand, the one with responsibilites to the role... IT HAS TO BE DAVID TENNANT, AFTER ALL HE IS THE DOCTOR, GOD DAMN IT! (oh fangirls, you make me smile) I will confess, i would love to see David as the Doctor caring the olimpic torch, but i'm more than happy for Matt and i can't wait to see him.

Checking the Matt Smith tag yesterday game SO much life. People took it so seriously it was amazing. It’s been a while since we’ve had such a light-hearted wank to lmao over, usually it’s all kinds of internalized sexist/racist bullshit.

After reading the official news about this tho it seems that they’re just letting Matt carry the torch because… idk why? He won’t be dressed as the Doctor, it’s not really supposed to mimmic the tv show, it’s just, you know, getting a TV star to carry the torch because it’s a cool thing to do (and great publicity for the show). I suppose the idea of it came from the fans asking for it after the episode, which is cool, because they basically found a way to please them, create buzz around the torch carrying ceremony, and promote DW a little more. Now that’s good marketing. I can’t help but feel like there is a huge DW fan running that department at the BBC and/or the olympics.

but guys

it’s the OLYMPIC torch and they are letting an actor carry it because of a 2006 episode of a tv show about an alien who travels in time in a blue police box and says shit like “Allons-y Alonso” and “bow ties are cool”

I mean thank you UK for existing

Tracking show tags after the advent of GetGlue is a fucking nightmare.

Omg, Bryan Cogman. That’s not the point.

MISSING

FUCKING
POINT

And, this is why this show needs female writers who get it. As great as Bryan Cogman is, it’s clear that there are certain things that he’s incapable of understanding.

oh god it’s my face
I wasn’t expecting him to answer at all tbh because he didn’t write the episode in order to explain the writing choices and he would never publicly criticize the works of his bosses if he happened to disagree with their changes? I mean, I honestly thought it was just a way word that people are angry at this might get out to D&D, if it hasn’t already.
But answering like that is just a pretty clear example of how some people just don’t get it and never will and why there should be more women writing stuff. As great as some male writers are at creating amazing female characters, this just screams of one of those times that, if a woman who had read the books had been sitting in the room when this script was being discussed, she would probably have spoken out and said “hey, how about we choose another word from the wide range of ALL THE WORDS AVAILABLE instead of this specific one that Asha has made a point to reject in the books?” (Or at least I like to think so). Like, no one is complaining about that word being said by Tyrion or even Cersei in the same episode. It’s appropriate to the oppressive patriarchal world they live in, but it’s not appropriate to how Asha navigates that world. It’s OOC and most of all it’s just fucking gratuitous.

Adding to my obsession with Attack the Block tonight, there are a couple of things you should know:

  • I am home alone because my roommate is out of town and I didn’t make any plans for the weekend
  • I have recently started reading more into screenwriting and me and a friend are thinking of taking a class just for the kicks
  • I have a bowl of popcorn and a glass of wine ready
  • I am going to watch Hot Fuzz and I have Hanna downloaded for afterwards
  • what I am trying to say is: you smart good people should recommend me movies with great scripts and that are great surprises such as Attack the Block
  • so I can download them and watch them tonight and tomorrow and then overanalyse their scripts and shit
lauranicus asks...

this is the smallest thing, really, but i love how attack the block succeeds where like 99% of horror movies fail in that CHARACTERS YOU ARE INVESTED IN DIE. the reaction to the aliens is that they're actually, you know, kind of awful because they're hurting people we care about a lot!!! that, in itself, is amazing and creates so much tension and just ON TOP OF EVERYTHING ELSE. MOSES AND HIS END IS JUST SO FUCKING SATISFYING AND JUST god.

I CANNOT LAUREN. IT IS THE MOST REFRESHING MOVIE I HAVE SEEN IN SUCH A LONG TIME. it just has ALL the right elements and then on top of that it has a bunch of elements that I didn’t even know I could expect to see in a movie because the people who make movies are usually so far from even trying to include them

I’ve actually been meaning to write a long-ass review of it but if I do it will probably be in portuguese so I’ll just dump some feelings about it here for a while

the perfection of it is basically that it not only succeeds in being a good horror/sci-fi movie because it has all the elements a proper horror/sci-fi movie has to have, it also makes a ridiculous fictional situation be entirely about the characters

and by making it about the characters it makes it about the bigger issues that define these characters, and that is what it makes this movie so fucking amazing

because these bigger issues are issues that are never being shown in movies

and even when they are shown, it’s never from the point of view of the people right in the middle of it (which are all the characters on this movie and essentially Moses)

from all of the alien invasion movies out there, that are all essentially about dealing with the idea of “others”, Attack the Block is probably the only one that actually takes the people who are constantly being treated by the media and society as “others” and makes the movie about them and their idea of what “the other” is

and that is not only super powerful from a ~social perspective~, it is also an INCREDIBLE FORCE FROM A NARRATIVE POINT OF VIEW. I mean people should be taking notes on this movie because the script is perfection. I know I am

it actually makes you realize how EASY IT IS to have a movie that’s good, interesting, refreshing and respectful? that the only thing standing in the way of people making more movies like this is WANTING TO MAKE MOVIES LIKE THIS

and there is the side bonus of being HILARIOUS and having a ton shit of successful pop and generation references that just make you realize how real those people feel even if they’re in the middle of fictional situation like a fucking ALIEN INVASION

and obviously that ending with Moses and how good the movie gets him as a proper true hero and all the shit Hulk film Critic mentions - his review of this movie is flawless as well (I noticed this second time watching how all the scenes with Moses fighting or trying to fight the aliens are essentially him preparing himself for his final sacrifice that he basically knew would eventually come because he was their leader and he knew he’d have to take responsibility for his actions, but at the same time he is a kid and it takes him all those scenes to find it in himself even if it was there all along HE CRIES AT ONE POINT GODDDDD I HADN’T REALIZED THE FIRST TIME I SAW IT BUT HE. CRIES.)

and one last thing: I am so glad it adresses one of my biggest fears from when I was 15 and only had pre-paid phones? WHAT IF MY LIFE IS IN DANGER AND I DON’T HAVE ENOUGH CREDIT TO CALL MY MOM BY THE TIME THE REVERSE CALL SONG ENDS I WILL BE DEAD

I s2g I cannot get over how good attack the block is

mcheropants asks...

BOMB GIRLS!!!!!

ohhhh I just finished the first series? AND OK GOOD there’ll be a second one, because I heard it was supposed to be a miniseries but they decided to pick up as a full series? I MEAN THEY COULDN’T LEAVE IT LIKE THAT.

but yeah I loved pretty much every relationship in the show? which is something I really look for in writing, and I love how even though the characters are well-written and interesting (and they make mistakes! and compromise! and learn from it!), they really come out alive when they’re interacting and evolving together and growing. and that comes out both in the awesome lady friendships that are everywhere but also in relationships that could have been so cliché and custom-made, like Gladys and her fiancé (I was so surprised by the way they both grew along the series even if he as a character is pretty meh).

mostly I am still amazed that someone decided to make a show about ladies in WWII tbh and that it happens to be this great and delicate and respectful and self-aware and moving
